The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic, collect, generate, and evaluate evidence, and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.

Argumentative essays are usually structured following a formula. The five paragraph formula is common. The first pragraph is the introduction and must include a THESIS STATEMENT. This tells the reader what the essay is about:
