EXCURSIONS

Excursions are when we leave the classroom in order to have a different learning experience. They are fun and help students improve their English and get to know their new city.

I have LOTS of ideas for excursions. I really want to go the Victoria Market and find out your opinions about it. Do you like this kind of shopping? Do you shop like this at home? How is it different from markets in your country? Will you take your friends there? We can present our opinions in the class and some people can find out facts and present those.

I also would like to go to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. There is a place in there dedicated to short films made by people from Melbourne and they tell all kinds of stories about their lives. You can learn a lot about Melbourne from these movies.

Any other ideas for excursions?

How do you think excursions can help improve your English?

opinons and facts in an essay.

An argumentative essay should contain both opinions and facts. Facts are more highly regarded than opinions as they have been established by sources other than yourself. Research is essential for an argumentative essay.

Fact: - The temperature will be 28 degress today. (source -the Weather Bureau)
Opinion - I think its a lovely warm day.

Fact or Opinon?
I love chocolate.
Chocolate was first made in Mexico.
Mary never eats chocolate.
Chocolate is made from beans from the cocao plant.

Try giving your own opinions in English and try repeating facts that you hear/read.

Argumentative essay

The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic, collect, generate, and evaluate evidence, and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.
- from http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/685/05/

Argumentative essays are usually structured following a formula. The five paragraph formula is common. The first pragraph is the introduction and must include a THESIS STATEMENT. This tells the reader what the essay is about:

EXAMPLES:
In this essay, I am arguing against capital punishment.
In this essay, I argue that following fashions is a drain of the purse and a waste of time.

Can you think of a more interesting way to write a thesis statment?

personal journal

Easier - You don't have to be a great writer, perfect speller, or creative thinker to keep a personal journal. Journal writing means that you regularly write down your thoughts and experiences.

Harder - A journal is a continued series of writings made by a person in response to their life experiences and events. Diaries contain a description of daily events. A journal may include those descriptions, but it also contains reflections on what took place and expresses emotions and understandings about them. It doesn't matter what you call your writing, either a diary or journal, as long as you see the distinction between these two ways of writing.
From http://42explore.com/journl.htm
EXAMPLE:
Today I went into the city for my new job as ELICOS teacher. I enjoyed being in the city and found a cool and cheap place for sandwhiches. It is in a hip part of town and I can sit down and watch the people go by. I told my sister about it and she is trying it out today. Hope she wears here funky clothes!!

A journal doesn't have to just be about your observations and experiences. You can use it to practice all kind of writing and improving your English.

A blog is also a journal. Try creating your own blog and sharing it with the class. Your friends can learn about your exciting time in Australia and even write back to you.
